The book argues that digital technologies, by amplifying human cognitive capacities, are generating a transformation comparable in scale to the Industrial Revolution-producing both unprecedented prosperity (the "bounty") and a deepening distributional problem (the "spread"). While acknowledging the work's strengths, namely its coherent synthesis of technological and economic developments and its original discussion of welfare measurement, the review focuses on its conceptual limitations regarding the labour share and income distribution. Drawing on the literature on capital-labour substitution and functional income distribution, it argues that the book overattributes distributional outcomes to technology, thereby flattening a multi-causal structure; that it drifts toward technological inevitability; and that it presents findings largely based on advanced-economy experience as if they were a universal technological law.
